Just started playing this again, so far made 3 patrols (its early October 1939) and have sunk 6005 tons.
Just slapped on a mod (as well as many others lol) to increase the ships sailing arouind and to populate harbours so i dont have a patrol like my again (no ships sunk!)

So captains ... How much tonnage have you sunk?

I used to be up there, been at least a year since i played.

Time to go reinstall it again!

I remember turning my VIIC into a UFlak and looking for planes to play with :D

I think I had 300,000 in 1941 in a type VII.

I do not play singleplayer campain ever again! It was so horrible! What it was all about was like "go to patrol this and that coordinate and stay there for one day an come back". There was never some good fights or even Cargo ships! Although I like to play multiplayer.;)

Well, after you got to wherever you were going to can kind of look around wherever you want afterwards, so long as you didnt run out of fuel.

I would either hit the area north of ireland, or down by gibraltor, depending on the coordinates for my patrol, i think.

You can also snoop around online, and find some mods that give you more convoys and shipping traffic.

I remember using the hollywood mod, which gave you more explosions, let your ship sustain a bit more damage, but flood easier, so whenever you got hit, it was always an adrenaline rush to try to save the boat and survive.

Then playing multiplayer with the hollywood mod, i would play with a friend, and forget about the convoys, we would go after each other!

Two rules, no homing torpedoes, and you couldnt go below 25m (bottom depth for torpedoes) that was real fun.

Gibraltar is British territory you know. It might just explain where those fighters came from. Possibly.

lol, i pick up the game and started playing it again the other day, forgot how good an actual game it is, i did my first patrol, came across a merchant ship but it saw me and headed the other way :P

ive only ever come across planes once that i remember, and that was another time when i attacked 2 merchant ships which were quite close together, planes came out of no where :P

I have had this game since release and yet never got around to playing it properly. Bought it when i had a load of coursework to do and so put it aside and forgot to pick it up again. Will go reinstall it later and give it another go, thanks for the reminder

Currently playing SHII. No, I don't have SHIII, but II is pretty good.

Last night I had to attack three Polish destroyers. I took the first one out from head on at a really close range, only to end up busting my periscope when I ran into the Destroyer. Now completely blind, I turned and surfaced the boat... Only to find myself right in front of a second destroyer. Getting rammed by destroyer hurts.

I'm in January 1945, and I have over 1 million tonnes! It's a fantastic game, the best sub simulation out. The bad news is that Silent Hunter IV will be an american submarine sim...

U-boats are so much better!

That's not bad news. Any new sim is good news to me. Supposedly there is an add-on for SHIII in the works as well, so all is good.

the game has a couple probs, I guess they don't expect you to try to enter Skapa Flow, but I did it twice without any trouble :(

other than that it's pretty cool :)

was being chased by a destoyer (in shIII) in the channel, thought id lost him and went to periscope death so i wasnt scrapping the bottom no more. spin my persicope round to see it coming right at me!
order the boat to dive lower, making a hard right at at full speed .... too late!

smack, pipes start bursting ... flooding .... i order to the surface expecting to be shot up.

The destoyer is nose first ... stuck in the mud of the bottom of the channel ... he had struck my coning tower and ripped the bottom of his hull apart hahahaha.
best thing was the coning tower was mostly fine and i was able to cont with the patrol! :D

Theres mods avaiable which plonk ships in port.

last time i entered scapa ... i had to sink in past patrols ... engaged a few of them with the deck gun.
once in sunk a Aux crusier (for deffs) and a battleship (think it was a BB could have been a carrier).
hid in a shallow end of the base for the rest of the day and snuck out during the night ... then fought off swarms of torp bombers on the home run hah!

Hey thats sounds grand! I also sank a destroyer when I thought I was done for. It splitted in two parts just outside Calais, but the funny thing was that the rear and front of the ship was still sticking up through the surface because it was so ground! Then a big lot of Torpedo Patrol boats arrived and circled around it, probably thinking "what tha???":D

Well am around the 30-40 ton mark and still sinking ships in U-16 ... my little Type II.

However am having trouble escaping Destroyers once they have clicked on where i am.

When i have played later war missions, in places like the atlantic i could just dive, go at slow speed and head in circles towards the crush deapth level off and sail away.

However, the North Sea and the British East coast are not that deep so i cant escape the deapth charges nor can i outrun the destroyers ... who keep pinging me!

So any suggestions on how to get out of this hairy situation without dying?

This game looks really nice. Sometime this week I'll be heading over to Best Buy and grab a copy. What's the learning curve like? I remember in CFS3 it was easy at the beginning, but once you made the realism 75-80% it was harder, and I still can't land if my life depended on it. I'm serious, if I had to land, or die, I would die. Either by getting shot down, or most likely smashing into the ground while landing :p. And is the game really visual? I remember in BF1942, when your under water it just shows you a radar, and to get an enemy under water you either had to wait for an allie to spot the ship and get it onto your radar (which almost never happened) or stick your parascope out, spot him, hope he didn't spot you, get down a bit and shoot.

pretty easy to play ... i have most of the realstic options off ... am there for the fun not the sim lol

the game ive read gets tougher as the war goes on as each side develops new weapons etc

as stated above geting caught by a destroyer is basically death for you .... unless soemone can help me !!! lol

Hmmm....well, no your most likely buggered when the Yanks or Tommies takes up the big guns, but if you are lucky, you might get out of there. I am very proud over one mission where I took myself all the way to Cuba and cirkled around for a bit around the carribean and sinked 6 (!!!!!) ships, all of them was alone, with no escort! Probably doing the Florida-Brazil tour. Of course, it was a loooong trip over the ocean. and I used the map to get a good route so I would meet any ships.

Now I have 2 questions:
1. Did anyone else get this map with your game where all the shiping routes where on?

2. Has ANYONE taken the route south of Africa and into Asian water and did you really meet anything? (The "museum" showes Australia, Japan, and India amongst other so.......)

To avoid being smashed into pieces:
1. ALWAYS have lookouts and ALWAYS be at surface while not attacking!
2. If contact with a single Merchant, HAVE FUN:D
3. If contact with Destroyer/E-boat/Task Force/Convoy: PERISCOPE DEPTH!!!
4. Lower speed to "ahead slow" and try to make sure your periscope is not high up in the air more than necessary
5. If meeting single warship, DO NOT ATTACK! (unless your really good or just stupid:p )
6. If detected: DIVE!!!!DIVE!!!!DIVE!!!! Change depth and course all the time, but DO NOT accelerate speed!
7. Hope for the best and try NOT getting into much trouble.

Good luck!!! (I can tell that Enigma might need this stuff:p )

Think its now Feb '40 for me, up to 40 000 tons.

Still in U16 my Type II as my renown is going up very slowly (i remember getting a type VII after only a few patrols last time round) think another patrol and ill be able to get my Type VII :D

although still leaves the problem of operating in the north sea or the coast of England and being pinged left right and centre once picked up. Although ive been able to get away a few times by just keep moving and heading into the port for cover around the docked ships and the moles lol

I try and get it so as soon as they start turning to come charge me, I stop or try and turn 180, then when they are right above me or about to be, full speed and try and go in the sonar blackspot behind them and go as fast as I can, matching their turns by going the opposite way to keep in the blackspot.

As soon as they start coming round again, stop, dive lower and repeat. Takes a while to get right but got me out of most trouble, one or two did take half an hour of this and by the end of it I was a nervous wreck.

Or.. just as they go overp, emergency surface with a rear torpedo tube loaded, fire and crash dive. Sunk a few destroyers doing that.
