Apparently, EA and DICE have plans for an open beta of Battlefield 2142, as well as a demo version.
We sent a few questions to DICE, but since the team is too busy working on the new title, the Marketing Department has sent us back only one answer. We'll post the rest as soon as we get it.
Quote:
BF2142.com- We noticed that you have confirmed the release of a demo at a later stage, could you give us more information about it, as in how far before or after the game release the demo would be out?
DICE- The demo for BF2 went out about 10 days before launch if I remember correctly, I am sure something similar will be the deal for 2142. We are also going to throw out an open beta in the beginning of August. The beta is predominately to learn about large scale issues, i.e. when we have 10 000’s of people playing at the same time, eliminating some of the problems we have encountered after launch previously in the franchise. Keep your eyes open to join.
Sounds good.

it's an open beta so everyone can get it no number limit, you just download it when it comes out;)
Also this looks like a good site for info on weapons, maps, etc. Also has forums where I got the info about beta from.

stop being such a defeatist, it may be good now that they have no historical and political issues to worry about.

Its my opinion, this is nothing more but BF2 with new vehicles, weapons and maps (which look crappy on the screenshots). Its unbelievable that theyre going to sell this as a full retail game. Have to hate EA for this.

at least they are trying to make it better. by making it an open beta they will see if it is crap before they release it. and its not like it will cost to join the open beta, so whats the problem.
i love bf2, while it doesnt crash. so if this one doesnt crash it will be brilliant

They replaced those with scientific ones. Too much Starship Troopers the movie and not enough Starship Troopers the book. The way military science is progressing, all of a sudden tactics will degenerate into open warfare on the streets instead of the careful clearing and cover usage of MOUT? Mechs? MECHS?
How are mechs even an option? The first sign of steep terrain they'll flip, not to mention the ability to trip the damn things.

Soldier1 "Ok, I'm ganna get the mech's attention. When I run this way, you stick your foot out, got it?"
Soldier2 "Got it!"
LOL! But in all seriousniss, I agree with you 2ltben. I was never really into the mech thing. But it could actually be pretty fun. Im probably ganna download the beta.

I was thinking more along the lines of something heavy flying into the legs, or an explosive hit it(as its the most vulnerable point, lose a leg and it flips)

Guys, its a game. I don't think there was ever a promise of scientific, political, or historical accuracy. At least not with the fictional premise of BF2142...

Exactly.
Also, we haven't reached 2142, so it's kinda hard to say what they should be using with unknown constraints.

It's not. I don't remember how many people they said, but it will be a specific number, with those that own BF2 getting first dibs. They say that in this interview:

Regardless, ETQW FTW! I've yet to see Splash Damage say anything bad about DICE, but I've seen two interviews now where the DICE guys talk shite about Splash Damage.

Fiction is not a license for bullshitting your audience. A great deal of BF's audience are the kind of people who play RO, OFP, simulations and the like. I'm not saying it should be a simulation, but would it kill them to lay off the suspension of disbelief?

With it being fiction, who is to say what is bullshit and what is not?

Have you seen the blueprints for these Mechs that you're bashing? You don't know if they're using flexible alloys for the structures or if their joints are designed like ours are. I don't think that would be very law-breaking.

lol!
Fiction is not reality. It is whatever the artist/author/whatever wants it to be. They don't have to follow any pre-established rules or laws if they don't want to.

Actually you do. If you sell something as hard scifi like 2142 is and you have something so ridiculous that it couldn't possibly work in real life, then it creates a suspension of disbelief, which is the last thing any game designer wants. Fiction isn't whatever the author wants it to be, its what the audience allows it to be.

Methinks that's a pretty narrowminded view to take about fiction. For a start, having a suspension of disbelief is a great thing for a game designer to create, and almost essential to create an immersive game with our current expected mechanics.
Fiction is just what the author wants it to be. You'll find that there is an intended audience for every kind of fiction. I've read some pretty damn surrealistic books in my time, and played some games that wouldn't work in real life, an example of which, would be, say Mario. Games like Tetris, Donkey Kong, Mario and every other game that doesn't base itself on realistic mechanics relies on the suspension of disbelief to appeal to an audience, and as far as I'm concerned, you can't beat that. Even something as realistic and epic in scope and attention to detail as 1944: D-Day will require some suspension of disbelief to make it immersive, otherwise we will spend our whole time wondering why we can see polygons here, and why we can see pixels when we stare at something really closely.
But at the end of the day, if BF2142 seeks this kind of suspension of disbelief, and just wants the player not to focus on story or realism and just enjoy blowing the crap out of each other with huge mechs, they should lay or the storycentric nature of their trailers, and stop, as 2ltben has said, marketing themselves as hard sci-fi. I don't know, it should be fun to play.
