DON'T BLOW THE 1.3k!!!
Are you buying a computer from a manufacturer? Build your own instead by shopping for individual parts on places such as www.newegg.com. I am not a newegg employee, I just have to tell you, if you want much better performance for the same price, build your own (if you don't know how to find someone who does).
I spent U.S. $1.3k and built my entire computer from scratch (including operating system) and it is top-notch. I'm always first to load in battlefield 2. If you would like some pointers on what to get, feel free to ask me, because we both have a semi-low budget. If gaming is what you have in mind, and with your budget, may I suggest a GeForce 6800 GT 256MB graphics card for $300? Or, if you want higher performance at not too much higher a cost, the GeForce 7800 costs around $470 now.
Oh and welcome to the forums.

Airforce that sounds like one sexy computer. GeForce 7800GTX in SLI? I think that's more powerful than any game in the market can compare to right now... total overkill :p
I still stand by my point that building your own computer is much cheaper. If I replaced my GeForce 6800GT with GeForce 7800 GTX SLI, 1300 - 300 + 940 = 1940 US dollars, /1.2374 = 1568 Euro.
My computer, at US $1300 or Euro 1050:
++ EPox EP-9NPA+ Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard with 1 PCI Express slot
++ Antec SmartPower 2.0 500W Power Supply
++AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice 1 GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor 2.2 GHz clock speed
++Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM 80GB Serial ATA150 HD
++Lite-On IDE DVD-ROM drive
++Zalman 92mm 2 ball cooling fan for processor
++SAMSUNG 710N-BK 17+ digital LCD monitor
++Corsair 1GB XMS DDR 400 RAM
++GeForce 6800 GT 256MB GFX Card
++CoolerMaster midtower case with 2 120mm fans and side air duct
++$100 Windows XP Home Edition (stupid Microsoft)
All that for 1050 Euro!! And again, replace the GeForce 6800 GT with GeForce 7800 GTX SLI and it's only 1568 Euro, at a very slightly lower performance than the 2600 Euro computer Airforce mentioned, in terms of processor only.
If you replace my 3500+ AMD Athlon 64 with the Airforce's 4000+ AMD Athlon 64, it's only $150 more, or Euro 121! Add in 3 more GB of DDR400 ram and that's $350 more, or Euro 283.
Which means a computer at almost exactly the same performance as Airforce's Euro 2600 one (higher in fact, since I calculated with 4 GB of XMS DDR RAM), when built by yourself, is only Euro 1972!!! That's 600 less Euros!!!! THAT'S CRAZY TALK!!! True, it doesn't have a DVD burner, or an expensive redundant custom sound card (the built in one on the mobo is great) or Ashampoo software to wash your hair with, but who needs that for gaming really? Even if you add in a DVD burner and an expensive soundcard and a larger HD, it's still 300-400 less Euro's. Heck, my computer even had a $230 monitor. Subtract 200 Euro from my build! That's 500-600 less Euros.
Okay, let me catch my breath. Here is the conclusion: You can build a computer slightly superior to the 2600 Euro one offered in Germany for 500-600 less Euros, if you build it yourself. Building only takes 7 hours, even for me who has never built his own computer before.
P.S. I am sorry if I offended anyone, I just get way too excited when it comes to building your own computer and saving cash.

Honestly, who needs 4 GB of RAM? Are they planning on rendering their own high polygon 3D movies and running banking calculations in the background while they are playing their games?

Of course :p
The last 6 years, I've been playing console games.. (mainly PS2).. got a HDD in it.. + lots of online gaming going.
Ok, i'm looking at spending 1.3k(AUSTRALIAN DOLLARS :P = I dunno :p google it)..
looking at something like this -
AMD 64+ 3000 to 3400 (or better)
1 or 2 gig ram
200 gig hdd
good gfx card.. 256 meg preferred that will play latest games.. on high or close to..
+ 17/19 inch CRT or LCD.
I'm doing workplacement at a place called "CUP computers" at Lansvale, so hopefully I'll get something there.. any recommendations on parts/systems/anything? :D

Are you building your own computer? Build your own computer!
Here are some tips on what you should get:
For the processor go with the 3400 over the 3000 AMD, the price to performance ratio is worth it. If you have to choose between Clawhammer, NewCastle, or Venice, always go with the Venice, it has the newest and smallest process type (90 nm as compared to the others which are 100 nm or larger). If you have to choose between socket 754 or socket 939, here is the tradeoff: 939 seems to be the wave of the near future, and 754 seemingly is going to be retired soon. 939 is more expensive (not by that much). However, 754 could still be used for a good 2-4 more years, who knows. I went with the 939.
For a gaming rig (and especially if you're on a budget) you have no need for 2 gig of RAM. 1 gig of RAM will perform fine. This will save you about $100+ to spend on your graphics card. Remember, graphics card determines by far how well games run. Also, as long as your mobo (motherboard) has slots for additional RAM, you can upgrade later on and add more RAM if you need (which I doubt you will in the near future).
200 GB HDs are substantially more expensive than 80 GB HDs or 100GB HDs. If you are making the computer for gaming, you don't need 200 GB, since you can spend that money for the graphics card. Each newest game is 1-3 GB, and with 80 GB you can install about 35 newest games. As long as you can manage your HD space, you will never need 200 GB. Use the extra money on the graphics card.
Additionally, make sure your HD is at least 7200 RPM (standard) and is Serial ATA 150 (the newest HD technology that loads faster than Serial ATA 100, but Serial ATA 100 are still being sold). Serial ATA 150 will make load times faster for you.
For the monitor, I would go with the 17" analog LCD. 17" monitors are smaller than 19" ones (duh) but I find it more convenient when you game to have a more focused screen. 17" is still huge to begin with, mind you. They are also substantially cheaper, which means more money for the graphics card. The max resolution of newer 17" monitors is also conveniently the ideal resolution of playing games at (I believe 1280 x 1024). Make sure your refresh rate is around 16 ms, which means a max of 72 refreshes a second. This is needed to run newest games without artifacts. A 17" analog LCD monitor with 16 ms refresh is great for gaming.
Now for the best part...the graphics card! If you took my advice (build your own computer and save money on the RAM, HD, and monitor), you should have a lot more money to spend on your graphics card, which is the mainstay of how well your game performs. The GeForce 6800 GT sells for a cool US $300 right now, and the GeForce 7800 GTX sells for $470. These are really high end graphics card for your price range, especially the 7800 which boasts the newest technology in rendering. I would go for one of these over the ATI Radeon x800 cards, as the performance is better on the GeForces and the prices are about the same (yes I did a lot of research).
The graphics cards come in two kinds of slots, AGP and PCI Express. My recommendation is go with the PCI Express slot graphics card. These cost more than the AGP, but the AGP is dying and will be replaced with PCI Express on newest mobos. Buy a PCI Express graphics card, and make sure your mobo has a PCI Express slot.
You are about to spend a butt load of money on your gaming rig. Do not let that money go to waste! Settle for nothing less than the best system you can possibly get with your budget. Do some research, and listen to my advice, it will only maximize your gaming experience!

Ah, it happened about 31 years ago Dave. Aussie thru and thru, and sorry Airforce but PC's must be cheap in Germany. Here in Oz those prices are pretty good, unless of course you build the PC yourself which not everyone knows how to do. Try going to a PC retailer here, the same PC will cost you about 20 percent more. We're talking about Australia here mate, we only have 20 million people living here, not 70 million. People have to make money somehow. I bought my PC from Winner and have never had a prob with it.
