It's been rumoured for a couple of months, and now it's confirmed, the Multiplayer component of F.E.A.R. is going to be released for free on August 17th.

F.E.A.R. Combat is the complete multiplayer component of F.E.A.R. that will be available for download for free on August 17th 2006. F.E.A.R. Combat includes all the updates, all the new official maps and the new official modes released for F.E.A.R. Multiplayer in one downloadable file. F.E.A.R. Combat users will be able to play against the owners of the retail version of F.E.A.R. as well as the other F.E.A.R. Combat users.

Multiplayer Modes:

Deathmatch (DM): Deathmatch is a free for all, where it’s every man for himself.
Slowmo Deathmatch (SDM): Slowmo Deathmatch is a version of Deathmatch with the exception that there is a slowmo hypo that any player can obtain. Once the power up is fully charged, that player can slow the whole game down and utilize the speed advantage given by the power up.
Team Deathmatch (TDM): Team Deathmatch is a team based free for all, where the only goal is to kill as many of the other team as possible.
Slowmo Team Deathmatch (STDM): Slowmo Team Deathmatch is the slowmo version of Team Deathmatch, with the exception that there is a slowmo hypo that any player can obtain for their team. Once the power up is fully charged, that player can slow the whole game down and utilize the speed advantage for their whole team.
Elimination (ELM): Elimination is game of last man standing. Every player starts with one life and must fight to be the last man standing in order to win.
Team Elimination (TELM): Team Elimination is the team based version of Elimination, where one team must eliminate the other in order to win.
Capture the Flag (CTF): Capture the Flag is a team based mode, where each team’s objective is to capture the other team’s flags. The team with the most flag caps at the end of the round will win.
Slowmo Capture the Flag (SCTF): Slowmo Capture the Flag is a version of CTF with the exception that there is a slowmo hypo that any player can obtain for their team. Once charged and activated one team will be able to utilize the speed advantage given when the whole game is running in slowmo, giving many strategic advantages for that team.
Conquer All (CA): Is a form of Capture and Hold, where 2 teams compete to capture all the checkpoints. In order to win Conquer All, one team must gain control of all the checkpoints simultaneously.
Control (CON): Control is also a form of Capture and Hold, but the difference is that the scoring is different. Holding any checkpoint will accumulate points for your team, however capturing all the points will not end the round. The winning team is determined by the team with the most points when time expires or if one team reaches the max points.

Wow what made them do that??

Sounds pretty cool to me, I've played FEAR multiplayer but don't remember too much of it.. If it's anything like the singeplayer than it should be good, or at least worth a free download!:D

They want people to get addicted to the MP and hope that some might buy the full game.

Wolfenstein did this with Enemy Territory right?

Indeed they did. Although I thought it was a pretty stupid thing to do. They had thousands upon thousands and downloads. Just think how much money they lost?! But back then I was young and naive. Now I'm just naive

I'm looking forward to the FEAR online. I've played the [freaky-assed] SingePlayer, that was good fun. Never got around to playing it online though.

If anyone finds out why they're relasing FEAR online for free, let us know. I'm intregued.

I'm guessing they'll hope that people want to buy the full game and of course the new expansion pack (Extraction Point) that comes out soon.

O, the map list above doesn't include all the custom maps you will be able to play.

FEAR Multiplayer was okay, a bit fun..

..but not really worth the download time. It was standard MP fore, just with kicks.

thats awesome, i loved the fear MP demo and wanted to buy it so bad, but it was just one of those games i really didn't want to fork over $40 or $50 for. now that this is coming out i have almost no reason to buy the game since i never found the SP demo even the slightest bit scary! yay!

Meh, the FEAR multiplayer isnt all that great. Its REALLY fast paces guys running around with machine guns, and human crispers lol. I think theyre making it free to advertise the expansion pack and FEAR 2.

Umm.. Will the owners of FEAR be able to play on these "free" servers? I wouldn't bother to register.

Saden, It's about what people like. I like realism and fast paced gameplay. For example I play Operation Flashpoint, Red Orchestra and then I play games like FEAR and Half-life 2.:)

Yeah, I like both types too, but FEAR doesn't even have any teamwork involved. HL2:DM, DoD:S, CS:S all have teamwork (if your in a good clan).

It's released. All download mirrors seem really slow though, I'll wait until the weekend.

LOL on "HL2:DM" I just realized why that smiley is there. You tried to type HL2: DM except the colon and the D made the smiley.. For some reason I think that is hilarious.:p

Anyway the FEAR combat thing, I am not sure will be worth it. Fear multiplayer isn't particulary fun. Obviously it looks great and has cool effects but the gameplay in multiplayer is not so good.

Yes, all you need to do is to download the 1.07 patch, if you already own FEAR.

Downloaded the free MP... the game play is fun for about 20 mins then you get sick of getting killed as soon as you spawn in and how over powered the penetrater is. This is a good game for twitch gamers and CS fans

I find that TDM is vastly better than regular DM because you get shot in the back about 10 times less. Also players actually sort of work together :)

I wish there were more open maps with opportunites for flanking etc. The weapons are conducive to real life tactics in some cases IMO.

Wow that seems a little generous of them. I have the game, but I can't play online for a certain reason and this is exactly what I needed.

Rapishorrid

or a certain reason

God only knows what that is.. strange though as I have the same problem! *cough*:D

I played a bunch of multiplayer and thought it was pretty good, especially for free.

DM is crap. Dont even try it! TDM is alright still kind of weird. CTF is really fun though. No crazy spawn killing and insane masses of just shoot whatever moves situations. It's better because you actuall have an objective and your team will follow you etc. However do not come expecting realism. Obviously that's not the case.. it's also not like CS or anything. The graphics become part of the experience. The particles explode around you and suddenly you have no idea what's going on. Good fun.:D

What I'm thinking with this is since it's free there can be some good oppurtunities for modding. Everyone can get this and the engine is brand new so it's really the perfect platform for modding. Assuming the engine can deliver in that aspect, I haven't read about modding it and am not really into any programming so I wouldn't know.:p

But even a simple mod could make this game better than current games that are out (for money). A "realism" mod could be very cool.

Some features it might have:
- Slower movement speeds
- Add ironsights
- Get rid of the kungfu
- Remove all existing weapons and replace them with real world weapons
* Give those weapons realistic behaviours (currently the weapons have weird response times and always shoot three shot burst)
- Change the HUD
* Getting rid of the HUD would be counterproductive
* Knowing the location of your teammates through the current system is fine
* Get rid of the ammo counter
* Get rid of the armor indicator (and all armor ingame, medkits too for that matter)
* Get rid of the crosshair (as mentioned earlier add ironsights)
* Get rid of everything on the HUD except for health and the friendly arrows for that matter
- Make it round based (like CS or America's Army for example)
- Change the player models to modern day "special forces" style models (nothing specific just no gas masked guys from FEAR :D)
- Get rid of the kill indicator and scoreboard
- Make some game modes that promote tactical gameplay (not team deathmatch)
- Tweak particle effects (obviously a pistol is NOT going to put a gaping hole in the wall)
- Lower jump height

That's just a totally random list I made, but I think with this being FREE, a modern engine that graphically looks beautiful it could be really awesome. Personally I think this could be the next Infiltration mod except far easier to make because the game already has all the assets needed (almost all props, textures etc will work perfect), the only new material would be player models and weapons. (plus all code changes).

And out of utter randomness I LOVE the ladder system in Fear I think it's much more realistic then say HL2's plus far easier to use, your never missing ladders or gettin gon them uninteionally.:D

Not the kungfu! Its the best bit about the game! :D

lol yes kungfu fights are great!:D But we are not all supersoldiers..:p
