well yet another Hurricane heading right up my BUTT, this one is going right over my house in Florida.
Last year our state got hit by 4 Hurricanes and I got hit by 3 of those, lost power for days, had a small generator but had to support my neighbors fridge and mine, but not this time, I got me a 5500 13hp 10 hours gas time generator... WooHoo...
Wish me luck.

I guess I am very lucky in Scotland. We have had one day where winds just reached over Hurricane level. We were in school at the time huddled up in the Assembly hall, girls screaming, 1st years also screaming, fire alarms going off, bits of the school flying off. Very fun.
That is our extent of a natural disaster. We have had no worse.

I hope they make it, isn't New Orleans gonna get the worst of it? That's what I'm hearing on the news over here.
Homer
08-29-2005, 09:10 AM
Yes indeed sadly they will, New Orleans, well most any way is 8 feet below sea level, so this will be a mess. I can't understand why Media Personnel are sending reports to this State & City, I mean my God, look at it.
Theres people that think they can ride out the storm, but man....
I use to love Hurricanes as a kid it was an exciting kind of adventure, but see I was a kid i didn't know better, now man when a Hurricane thats a 2 or above, I really start to worry, people say ya it's just a storm, but there the ones that were never in a Hurricane, I mean none stop winds over 100mph for over 3 hours or more then come the calmness from the eye over head and everyone thinks it's OK, but the Major* storms are behind the Hurricane so now were in for 3 or more hours of harder winds and deadly lighting...
I get chills just typing this... :(

Yep. Im sacred to turn on the news and see what Katrina did to them. I dont know what it was when it hit, but last I saw last night it was an CAt 5 Hurricane which is the biggest one to hit the US since Hurricane Andrew in the 90's. They were also predicting it to get bigger. Cat 5 is the top of the list they were saying and were trying to figure out whether or not to go to the Fugito Scale (Tornado Scale) . I had many ppl tell me yesterday that they have never seen such a defined eye on a hurricane. They better have evacuated them all....

I am really interested in stuff like natural disasters. Only reason I chose Geography in High School.
However, I don't like the fact that sitting in Yellowstone Park, USA, is a volcano large enough (called a Caldera) to create the effect of a volcanic winter, which is nearly exactly the same as either a nuclear winter or a the effect of a large meteor crashing into the Earth. This volcano could go off anytime in between now and roughly 25,000 years time. Which is a relief. I mean, whats to say it is going to erupt in our lifetime?
Anyhoo, thats a nasty looking hurricane.
<SaF>Sgt.S0apy
08-29-2005, 09:41 PM
if it does errupt the whole world would be effected, cos of all the ash will just block out the sun n stuff... if global warning doesnt end us then that bleedin volcano will.

Actually, Global Warming isn't the worst news, Global Dimming is. The world is actually getting colder, not hotter. :D That is not good news, it is even worse than Global Warming.
Chemistry teacher filled us in about a week ago about it.
Homer
08-29-2005, 10:45 PM
The Global warming and Cooling is crap if people think it's a man made problems, the earth has been getting warmer and colder for millions of years, it has been changing long before any human stepped on the grounds.
The earth will not change as Humans know it, meaning, Humans will be long dead before anything is drastically noticed, but there will be noone to notice it so it's all good.
we look at #'s at a Small, small, fraction, because in fact we are a Small, Small, part of the Whole amazing universe, and out little minds will not comprehend the meanings of what is or not.
everything you have come to know from Science and school, is Guesses/ fiction if you would from science, we didn't discover anything e just made names for things, the discoveries were there before we were, making names for them is just trying to make people feel at a place in this universe.

nobody knows what will happen until it actually happends. also homer are you tellin me that killing our 'o zone layer' isnt speeding up global warming/cooling??? we are killing our shield that helps protect us frm the sun but thats not a man made problem homer? im takin geography at the mo for my gcse, i can also tell you that it is possible that the ice caps could melt in my life time. but if the ice caps did melt the sea wouldnt perticularly rise... theres a reason for this, but i cant remember n dont have a god damn clue 2 bak it up with lol. (thats 3 marks ive already lost in my gcse test paper lol)
but like i said nobody knows what will happen until it happens

So your saying the fumes that come from our planet, that have been here for millions of year are killing our O-Zone, and not the Radiation and gas from outer space?
The chemicals we make were here for millions of years, we just put them together, the fossil fuels we use are apart of this planet, the earth is immune to the effects of things that come from its own self err.. planet.
And yes the world will not change drastically as We/Humans know it, it's just not going to happen.
Now if a meteor hits us and kills us thats a different story, but the Human killing the Earth is a bunch of BS, made up by green Peace... lmao

Homer, because your are from the US, the biggest fossil fuel using (sorry, abusing) country in the world, I will forgive you for that. I feel embarassed that my country, Australia, walks so closely in the US's shoes. That's the biggest load of crap I've ever heard. It's an ignorant statement and not helping anyone. It is us Humans who are not only warming the planet but degrading and abusing it as well. Reduce, re-use, recycle, repair, refill. Come to my house and I will show you a few things about self suffiency, and lessening the impact on the world. May you tread lightly on this earth.

The ozone layer protects us from ultraviolent radiation, gamma, beta, and alpha radiation, (amongst other things...).
The chemicals we make were here for millions of years, we just put them together, the fossil fuels we use are apart of this planet, the earth is immune to the effects of things that come from its own self err.. planet.
*shudder*... I don't know where to begin with that...
I'll forgive you... In my state of sleeplessness, I can't be arsed making a 7 page reply on why that is not quite right...
I'll just say this -
Oxygen kills us.

Fossil Fuels will never run out, you can pump millions of gallons a day and we would still not run out, fossil fuels are created everyday from millions of years ago.
I'm sorry if the truth hurts, and once again this has nothing to do with me being American????
This was from a Scientist about 4 years ago on BBC channel that I get from TV.
And "if" it was from me, then ignorants had nothing to do with it, it would be Opinion, please understand the difference, (If this was from me) i'm just relating what i saw.
Please keep countries out of this.
Fossil Fuels will never run out, you can pump millions of gallons a day and we would still not run out, fossil fuels are created everyday from millions of years ago.
Never ? They will run out sometimes and we better have an alternative source of energy by then. Fossil Fuels are used faster by men then they are created by nature

Not true, thats a little thing the gas companies made up to jack up the prices, think how much earth there is and how many oil facilities there are. Saying we will run out of Fossil Fuels is like saying we will run out of Polar Ice Caps. With that, keep in mind we are "In Between" ice ages, so some day when were all dead there will be another ice age.
The Gulf Cost pumps out as much oil as Saudi does, but after this Hurricane there jacking up the prices.

Did you know that the oil prices aren't raising because of the oil we are running out of.
Instead, we aren't running out of oil for a next 30 years.
Most of the industrial machinery is running on gas.
And that gas is depleting even quicker than crude oil.
The oil prices are raised because people are making abuse of the situation.
Oh my God there is war in Iraq let's pretend we can't get our oil from Iraq no more.
We could do things that would improve quality of life, and the environment.
We could make concrete roads, with just a tiny bit of asphalt over it instead of pouring 3 meters of asphalt.
This would even last longer, and the asphalt won't erode so you can drive softly.
We could make tires from recycled asphalt, we could split the asphalt and make nafta from it and we could split that in to gasoil, gasoline and LPG.
Our cars can drive on hydrogen or even pressurized nitrogen...
It is all possible, only the rich people get richer and the poor even more poor because the rich people are making benefit of it.
It's just pathetic to know... Did you know that Shell murdered an important patriotic person in Nigeria???
Just because he didn't allowed Shell to use those people as slaves!!
And they still are using them as slaves...
It's like this:
In exactly 13 hours we can prepare a Apollo-class rocket to fly to the moon.
In exactly 3 hours we can prepare a nuclear missile to fly around the planet to destroy a "threat".
But we cannot help people in New Orleans, we cannot (as a society itself) protect and help African, Russian or Asian people in desperate status.
In exactly 8 hours (this was already proven back in 1984, the 1 day-theory) we can blow planet Earth and Mars too smithereens...
EDIT:
Everyday, another 200.000 liters of crude oil is produced on this planet because of pressure.
The giant bulbs of oil come from either the "meteorite" that has put a couple of feet of dust over a damn lot of dead vegetation.
That 200.000 liters isn't enough to keep up.
We can use hydrogen, which is only good.
You can seperate water into hydrogen and oxygen.
Use hydrogen as fuel and oxygen again for burning it and you creat water.
This won't even touch mother nature.
More important -> we can use carbondioxide to create charcoal. or even crude oil when combined with water.
Jimmy

The Human Race has the power to create good and end almost all poverty.
Its just that we are all up our own arses that much we fail to see that.
The USA alone has enough Nuclear Weaponry to destroy the Earth more than once, and why? Because other countries have them too? Well then, the logical and smart thing to do would be to declare Nuclear Weapons, completely disallowed. Hell, all forms of warfare disallowed. Why can't we live in peace? Why can't we share?
Damn, the Human race disgusts the hell out of me. The leaders of the world disgust me. Bloody children.
Lt.Buck
10-24-2005, 08:45 AM
if we end all poverty and all starvation and all the other shit people always complain about the world would be over populated then people would be complaining about different things, its the way the humans as a race think there will always be something 2 complain about.
Wat shits me the most is when people complain about the americans spending millions of dollars on going to war in Iraq, when there are starving children in Africa.
Whats the most profitable organisation in the world...the catholic church of all things the catholic church wat do they spend there billions of dollars on? why cant they spend a couple of million to get rid of world starvation? cause the church is greedy and always has been.

Hmmmmm..... Volvo and Daimler car companies donated between 500,000 and 700,000 dollars to Iraq. Why? They are only two out of over 2000 world wide companies that illegally gave monies to Sadam.
Also... please tell me why Ford would buy electric vehicles and then destroy them. And if we so easily have access and technology to build these things, why don't we sell them in the US? Because the oil/gas companies and big business don't want them to. Shell gas station would go out of business selling gas at 3 bucks a gallon if everyone could buy an electric/fuel cell type vehicle that got 80 miles to the gallon. Here's a quick link if you want to see what ford is doing.
