The story of the Three Little Pigs' battle with the Big Bad Wolf has delighted children since it was written more than 150 years ago.

But the tale highlighting the merits of hardwork and practicality has become the latest to fall victim to political correctness.

A junior school production of the children's story has been renamed the Three Little Puppies for fear of offending Muslims.

Organisers of a children's music festival have altered the popular characters and lyrics because of the multi-cultural nature of the youngsters involved and their parents in the audience.

But yesterday Islamic leaders condemned the politically correct move as misguided and said decisions like this were turning Muslims into 'misfits' in society.

Children from Honley Church of England Junior School in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, were due to perform in a reworking of the popular tale which features the three little pigs.

The youngsters - aged from seven to 11 - were due to perform at Huddersfield Town Hall in June with 250 children from 63 schools singing along.

But organisers of the Kirklees Primary Music Festival decided to change the script to be 'sensitive' to Muslims at a recent committee meeting.

Committee member Gill Goodswen, head teacher of Stile Common Junior School, defending the move.

She said: "We have to be sensitive if we want to be multi-cultural. It was felt it would be more responsible not to use the three little pigs.

"We feared that some Muslim children wouldn't sing along to the words about pigs,' she said.

"We didn't want to take that risk. If changing a few words avoids offence then we will do so."

She stressed the decision was not prompted by a complaint from any school.

But Shaykh Ibrahim Mogra from the Muslim Council of Britain branded the move 'bizarre'.

He said: "The vast majority of Muslims have no problem whatsoever with the Three Little Pigs. It's always been the traditional way of telling the story and I don't see why that should be changed.

"There's an issue about the eating of pork, which is forbidden, but there is no prohibition about reading stories about pigs. This is an unnecessary step."

Other recent rows have involved 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' being changed to 'Baa Baa rainbow sheep' and Christmas events called 'winter' festivities.

Mr Mogra said: "How far are we going to go? Are we going to change the seven dwarves because it's discriminatory towards people who are physically less able? Where do you draw the line?

"Every time we get these stories Muslims are seen more and more as misfits. We have to accept there's a predominant culture here."

His views were echoed locally in Huddersfield.

Local councillor Terry Lyons added: "I can't believe that Muslims would be offended by this. This is pandering to a few extremists. People will take umbrage at this decision, making it easier for the BNP to recruit."

Mohammed Imran, of the Hanfia Mosque and Educational Institute said: "According to the Koran it's forbidden to eat pork or touch a pig, but there's no ruling about talking about them or singing about them."

Steve Price, head of Honley C of E school, said he had not played a part in the decision, but added: "We are part of the family of Kirklees schools. This family is set up to celebrate children's talents and I can well understand some head teachers being careful about not causing offence."

Ummm? WTF? First Piglet, then St. George's cross, now this.

What is with these non-Muslims being afraid of percieved offense in the British Islamic community? Are they supposed to be more sensitive to "Islamophobia" then Muslims themselves?

Well to be honest I take offense to the use of the word puppies. I find puppies are offensive and discriminate against cats and ferrets.

I hate this political correctness bullshit. It really digs at me. Those bastards think they are doing this to make sure they don't offend people, and whats most annoying is that not only does it fail, but its starting to offend me and a great deal of others.

Fucking exactly.

They keep up this shit and ethnic groups will be pushed further away, instead of bringing them closer in to our society.

Well done Great Britain. Bloody well done. If I ever meet someone who supports all this crap and I have a sawn-off shotgun in my right hand, I'll have a blast. (Pun intended)

It's more offending to be so wary of offense than to just go ahead and risk a few radicals being pissed off. If there are two or three British Muslims who are offended by the mentioning of pigs...sucks for them. Move somewhere else. Like Shaykh Ibrahim Mogra said in the article, it's the way the story has always been told...just leave it the way it is.

You can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all the people all the time. So don't try to...

But what is offensive in a pig? A pig is a pig. Pigs exist...should we kill all pigs?

One town last year banned Christmas iirc for the same ... but am sure that the top Muslim leaders in the area opposed the idea.

Disgraceful. Today is a bad day to be British.

I mean, come on. Whats next? The demolition of Christian churches because they are offensive to look at? Maybe even banning Christianity altogether (it wouldn't surprise me if that did happen).

Live and let live... the best way to get along I think... I would be offended if I were muslim... I can understand the intention but I would feel like something different... How can I be part of a community that think it has to change in such strange ways for me? If I live somewhere I don't want to be treated different from all others because of my looks, my religion or whatever... this decision is really strange...

The pig is either a filthy disgusting animal to the muslim people, or a god I can't remember. But what I do remember hearing about pigs and muslims is way way back in like the 1800's some American (or British) general captured 50 muslim soldiers and killed all but 1. Why did he leave the 1 to live? Because he coated each bullet that his men used to kill the other 49 in pigs blood, which meant they wouldn't go to "paradise" as they would if they died with "honor". Then he sent the one remaining soldier back to his country to tell everyone he knew about what happened.

Pretty good idea if you ask me.

The pig is either a filthy disgusting animal

So by that rationale, if a pig had a better personality, he's cease to be a filthy animal?

Political corectness is leading Europe to ethnical unrest and eventually VERY serious ethnical problems. Remmeber France?

People need to be politically correct, it's a fact of a life in today's world. That being said, lets not all go over board and freak right out when we hear the word... for example Arab. Many people find it offensive, but to me it is just another word for someone from the middle east. Yes it may be generalizing, the whole middle east but, do I freak out when someone calls me white, even though I am Parisian French? Nope I sure don't

So ya I say the word Arab, and I have been caught saying black, but to call them "African American" is such a large generalization that I find calling them that more offensive. Not everyone who is black is from Africa.

So to wrap this up, don't ever expect me to be 100% PC because I think it's all bullshit.

Ok so Iran got mad at the movie 300, but yet they have hundreds of movies portraying us as the evil ones who are out to take over the world, not to mention the movies that go on saying that if they suicide bomb then they go to paradise. WTF? They complain about this one movie that's historical/action and they thinkn the movies they have is ok.

300 was not historical they never claimed to be; which fuels your argument Bravo.
