View Full Version : Is our government really doing enough to counter terrorism?

DISCLAIMERS:

1. I am British, so this mainly applies to Britain. Attempting to comment on the US would be ignorant and ill informed.
2. This article/debate is not rascist in any way. At least, its not intended to be.

I always like writing articles or having debates on politics/world issues. So here is my contribution to you lot.

There is little doubt that the world faces many problems at the moment. Britain is by no means excluded from this and, arguably, suffers from more problems than some other countries. One of the biggest problems at the moment, if anyone hasn't noticed, is terrorism. The bad news, however, is that it only seems to escalating.

I presume most, if not all of you, are aware of the recent bombing attempts in London and Glasgow (as well several other bomb scares acrross the country, including one in Liverpool and one near me). I read an interesting newspaper article last night which did a very good job of mocking the failed attempts, whilst at the same time highlighting just how easily the bombs could have succeeded. It was only by coincidence that these bombs were detected; one car bomb was actually given a ticket for being parked on a double yellow line, another was clamped and a third discovered by paramedics attending to a paraletically drunk man.

The article I read also spoke about the Glasgow attempt, and it was this bit which the author used as his main point, and also the bit that got me thinking. As you may or may not know, the people responsible for the Glasgow bomb attempt were apprehended; one was wrestled to the ground whilst burning in flames screaming "Allah! Allah!". The man who apprehended him described the event in a TV interview. In addition, many witnesses who were there at the time apparantly were all shouting "let the bastards burn!".

The response by the government was swift. As we know, the government held a Cobra meeting and began hunting down down suspects. But that wasn't all: they also saw fit to censor the affore mentioned comments and the TV interview was not aired again. This demonstates quite clearly the governments attitude to the Islamic religion and terrorists.

"Welcome to the UK! Feel free to come in! We won't run any background checks on you or reject your immigration just because of your views. Oh, and don't worry about anyone saying anything to you; if they do then we will just arrest them for racial abuse."

So, while the government is giving more rights to immigrants who want to blow up our country, and ensuring that anyone who speaks out is marked as a 'rascist', they are not doing their proper job: ensuring the security of the nation. Its complete bo**ocks.

On a final note, lets not forget the human rights group. Ah, yes. They are as bad as the government. Their intentions are good, but unfortunately there is a time and place for human rights. When a terrorist is trying to blow up a nightclub and he is arrested, it is NOT a smart time to start complaining about his rights. And of course the government, who has more respect for its own integrety than the people and their safety, gives in to them. This begs the question: who is running the country? Well, I can answer at least part of that; its certainly not the people.

As some guy on another forum stated ... terrorism did not begin with 9/11.

Our country has been attacked by terrorists many many times, to simply blame it on immigrants ir complete bollacks ;)
A race/group of people should not be slandered because of a few.

And in this case, most of these guys where doctors, whom were let in iirc because we dont have enough docs in the country.

British attitute has and always be ... not worry ... when we start getting all up-tight about everything ... "they" win!

When the tube was bombed a few years ago, there was jokes flying around within the week about what happened, thats the way it should be.
Yes a bad event happened but you cant harp on about it for ever (no offence but 9/11 for example).

At any rate, how can the goverment do anything more ... its a police and MI5 (and to an extent MI6) matter .... polaticans should bugger off away from that type of work.

This is a subject I feel quite strongly about, and have done for a while now. This will probably start off as a good, crafted and well thought out piece of writing but end up being a rant about everything that's wrong with Britain.

I am British. And hate how the immigration office is being run. I read an article a few days ago [The Daily Mail] and discovered that a shocking one out of twenty-five houses in Britain are being given to immigrants along with benefits. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with legal migrants coming to England for an honest living. They pay their taxes. They support their families. These are the people we're after. So when we're told that illegal immigrants are destroying our country and killing our people... I get a little bit more than irate.

I also hate how we're completely giving in to these immigrants. We're changing our ways and our heritage so we don't offend them? What's that about?! If you want to live in our country, then you should be the ones to change. It pisses me off.

I think it was on the radio where I heard that more benefits [for food shopping] were going to be supplied to immigrants but was soon ended because not enough of them could read English to understand the offer in the first place.

Okay, with my rant about immigration aside... I'll move on to the terrorism threats. I know that the government is fully aware of terrorists in our country but it seems that they wait for a more serious problem before they try and solve it. They need to be two steps ahead and take a more serious approach about the whole situation. What they need to do is forget being considerate to terrorists and illegal immigrants and kick them out of our country. Forget human rights. Forget politics. It's gone too far.

Ah man, I need to get my head together... I'll add to this later.

*Edit* Just read Enigma's post so I thought I'll add: I understand that not all Asians are terrorists. I think it's unfair to stereoptype them. I wrote about honest, hardworking migrants which are fine... but it's when they're sitting behind closed doors laughing at us that really does my head in. Cheers.

What can the government do ... its not like Brown is going to pull a baton out and start beating people over the head....

They can only put in place policy, its a police and Intel matter.....

Again remember for 30 years we had attacks made upon the country by the IRA ... people seem to be easy to forget them or the other groups who have letter bombed and commited other acts over the years.

As for immigrants, most of the information to me appears to be bollacks. Stats show that there is an equal number of people leaving the country as there are coming in.
Those who come on in only make up a small percentage of the population.

This country has always been a haven for people to come into, i dont think we should stop that .... ensure they dont take the piss but not close the borders etc

Edit: here is a small list of groups which are or have been active within the UK and what they have been up to....

Scottish National Liberation Army - letter bombing and bomb hoaxs

An Gof - Cornish liberation terror group - made several bombings in the past

Animal Rights Militia - letter bombs and arson attacks

The IRA (PIRA, INLA, RIRA and other splitter groups etc) - bombings, kidnapping, murder, torture, drive bys etc etc also including organised crime

The Loyalists groups which have commited the murder of NI civillians, iirc am sure ive been told that they have also bombed places in NI and from what ive read are also involved in organised crime.

Kill 1 person in the street... its a murder
Kill several in the street... its a mass murder
Set Fire to Buildings... its Arson

But, the very second that a crime is done in the name of a "Cause", it becomes terrorism (Domestic or Global).

This very day i could go out, chuck a pipe bomb into an office building, detonate it, and gun down any one that attempts to flee... all the while screaming "For God" or "Allah" or "Christ" or "Irish Freedom" or "MILK AND COOKIES!!!" I would then be considered a terrorist.

See where im going with this? The police are doing a good job, AND their also getting extremely lucky, both of which are all well and good, commiting an act of "terrorism" is unbelievably easy. Its easier to commit terrorism, then 90% of actual crimes! why? because when commiting a crime, most often the goal is to do your dirty deed, and get away... not so with terrorism, getting caught is half the goal.

Im actually suprised random nutjobs havent clued in to this, just grab a gun, run out into the street and say their with the Taliban or some damn thing. That would make the news for sure . So considering such incidents have not happened, the police have been doing a good job... well, as good of a job as is possible under the circumstances...

The governments on the other hand, they are the ones that dropped the ball, but thats another story, for another time :D
