So I hear so much stuff about this game on forums, and I'm curious what's so great about it? Are there any demos for expansions?(I tried playing the demo for like the first one, and I was COMPLETELY lost, couldn't even fly).

Its one of the best WWII flight sims I have ever played. The damage system and flight system are top notch - the flight system actually aided towards my flight skills in real life.
The expansion pack is called IL2 Aces or something. Top notch...I might go play it lol.

IMO it is one of the best flight simulations out there.
With no doubt also one of the most realistic flight-simulators too...
If you can, and if you like flying... You should buy: IL-2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles IL-2 Sturmovik: Aces Expansion Pack Pacific Fighters Graphically wise it can still coop up with a lot of games since it has Shader Model 3.0 support so the water and horizon look much better...
If you liked IL-2 Sturmovik, and if you also like Modern Air Combat (complete with helicopters and stuff) then go for: Lock-On: Modern Air Combat Lock-On: Flaming Cliffs Lock-On: Black Shark *coming out soon*

is there online play? (any demos to try it out first?)

There's quite a large online community, so you'll have people to play with if you get it. Like Sani and SgtH3nry3 said, it's a fantastic WW2 combat sim. The flight model and damage model are outstanding. There are tons of different planes you can choose to fly, and with the new patch around the corner, a few new flyables are coming into the fray such as the Tempest and JU-88.
The only demo available is for Il-2 Sturmovik, the first game in the series. It's roughly the equivalent to vanilla Il-2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles. It'll give you a pretty good feel as to what to expect from FB+AEP+PF. You can download it here:

I've got Forgotten battles. I must say that i was a bit lost in the beginning, but then it all got clear. A great game with nice gameplay and a dynamic campaign. (really like that) But if you considering buying it, make sure you have a joystick first. (As i found myself completely worthless in dogfights, but you only want to play as a bomber gunner, nothing's stopping you.)

I'm SO confused!! Is there a guide for this game???(i'm trying the demo). I can't even lift off. lol wow
Here's a quick guide.
You have 2 options.
1: Turn on the auto-pilot (Press A) and let him take off for you (But wheres
the fun in that?) If you want to let him do it, press I first to turn on the engine, then A.
Or 2: Do it yourself, by following these easy steps -
--- 1- Set your flaps to takeoff by pressing F a few times, and raise them again by pressing V.
----2- Set engine power to 0% by pressing 1 on you keyboard. (default) Then turn on your engine by pressing I.
----3- Wait a few sec's for your engine to get started, and then slowly raise power by pressing the other number keys. ( 234567890)
----4- As you gain speed, press the down-arrow key (Or pull the joystick back, if you've got one.) and lift of the ground slowly. Dont do it too fast, or you'll most certainly stall, crash, and die.
----5- Yay, now you're flying, nice huh? But before you fly into battle to gain honor and glory and that kinda stuff, raise your flaps again by press V, and raise your landing gear by pressing G.
You may want to go check the control settings, to learn some of the other features.
*EDIT: If you dont like the restrictions of the cockpit view, you can change to other view modes by pressing the F2 and F3 keys.*

ah sweet, thanks, but is there any way to use the mouse instead of keyboard for flying? If not in the very first version, how about the Forgotten Battles or whatever version?
Blackberry

I dont think there is.. It would be a real mess anyway. Ever tryed flying a jet in BF2 with a mouse? Geez.. But there could be the option to use the mouse, can anyone enlight me?

well it's close to impossible trying to fly it with keyboard, especially when you're trying to shoot some planes down.

The only use for the mouse I've found is looking around when you have the keyboard as your controller.
By sheer accident I came upon this game a few days ago. It only just struck me that this thread and the game are.... <drumroll> .... the same! :D
So far it's pretty damned cool. When I have the time I will head to the local comp store and pick up a decent joystick to see what this game can do. Playing on a keyboard is just useless.

Got this sim quite a while ago, but only just got a joystick off a mate. Only problem is that whenever i take control using the joystick i have trouble rolling right, does anyone know how to change the settings on these? Its a logitech attack 3 if that helps :o
LOL Anyone tried the takeoff training mission (in a bf109) when you have the 1.2 patch installed? the instructor tries to take off and every time he veers off the runway into a line of bf109s ultimately ending up in a smouldering wreckage? seconds later it says "Now the plane is airborne, press "g" to raise the landing gear" :D

I bought Forgotton Battles+Ace Expansion and Pacific Fighters for around twenty pounds sterling all told when I was in the U.S. during the summer - it's one of the few decent games to run well on my laptop and the attention to detail is amazing - it's well worth buying even if you're just a WW2 plane buff.
The only annoying thing I've ever found with Pacific Fighters is the lack of a decent Torpedo Aircraft - making your attack on a carrier in a Beaufighter or a Betty is nerve racking, to say the least.
As to difficulty starting, play "B17-Flying Fortress" and try starting one of those swines up - they took realism a bit too far on that one!

ah i love this game, i had a save game as a Stuka pilot ... more of a stuka ace actually :p
6 air kills (at least 2, prehaps 3 from the forward guns)
200+ traincars destroyed
200+ vehicles destroyed
60-70 planes destoyed on the ground
around 50 iirc tanks destoyed
hundreds of field guns
and dozens of bridges.
However i was never able to claim a ship :(
Was wounded twice, first made me miss the rest of the lenninfgrad campaign after being burnt in the plane after it crashed on landing on the airstrip and the 2nd i tihnk i got shot. lol
The squadron was back to fighting in the cacucaus after retreating from stalingrad, here myself as squadron commander. We were nearly wiped out by the increase in soviet airfract and AAA. However it was not the red airforce or red army which destoyed my squadron ... it was a nasty HDD drive crash ... so much time put into the game wasted lol :(

I play this all the time with my keyboard, shot down more japs then my friends with joysticks could.
I was disappointed by microsoft combat flight simulator 3 (it's 3 right?) and then I picked this up and was soooo happy. now i got the il2fb+ACE+PF and REALLY wish i could find smore more american vs german missions. Be nice if the ever made a campaign for it.
Only thing that saddens me is that you can't fly any heavy bombers.
on that note, anyone who play this find any good mods/campaign/missions
I relied on my buddies before and i jsut can't find any good ones like they did.

Meh. He-111 is good enough for me. Although I was extrememly dissapointed to see that the C47 and B-17 included with the latest update patch were unflyable...

I would wish that they had done more with the paratrooper thing. One thing is that you can't fly the para plane, the second is that they are useless.
.. it Does look kinda cool when alot of paratroopers make a jump for it tho.

Im still relatively new to this game (and any flight sim really) but im determined to learn
*How do you navigate? is there a map or compass im not seeing?
*why is the tailwheel lock not working for me? wouldnt that prevent me from turning when taxiing etc? I thought it would help with aligning the plane for takeoff- so it doesnt go off the runway...
thanks for any help ;)
Blackberry
02-14-2006, 07:38 AM
We all have to start somewhere, aye?
*There is a map. Depending on the deficulity (damnit) setting, it can show icons of your friends, enemys, and waypoints (Including objectives). Now, only problem is that i can't really remember the key for it.. but it think its N or M.
*The tailwheel lock just locks the tailwheel. Consider it a light landing brake.
The thing you need is.. eh (Please forgive me, im getting sloppy) the most backward tail flap thing. If you have a joystick you can turn it and keep you on course by rotating the joystick either to the left or right. If you're using keyboard... eh, go check the control settings.. :D
enigma
02-14-2006, 01:33 PM
isnt the turning while taking off due to the simulation of engine torqe or some such?
the backward tail thingy is the rudder i believe ;)
DavidUpton
02-14-2006, 02:34 PM
Yes. Refer to Newtons Law: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Therefore, if you have an engine turning some propellor blades then the engine will naturally try to spin in the opposite direction causing you turn.

My verdict:
Best. Flightsim. Ever.
That can be argued ;) . I won't deny it's probably the best WW2 flight combat sim ever produced from a technical standpoint, but it certainly lacks immersion factors. Other sims that came before it certainly did that part better, such as European Air War and Rowan's Battle of Britain. EAW and BoB supported massive formations of bombers and lots of other planes all in the air at once. You try doing that in FB et. al. it'll become a lag fest. EAW also continued an atmosphere of "you're there in the war" throughout the menu screens and stuff. The dynamic campaign in FB also leaves a little something to be desired. It has certainly been improved by Lowengrin (you can get his DGen here: www.lowengrin.com), but it comes nowhere near the living, breathing, dynamic world of Falcon 4 with community updates (SP4.2, BMS, FF, HFFM) or Falcon 4: Allied Force (newest iteration of Falcon 4 produced by Lead Pursuit). That's something to experience. If you're into flightsims I highly recommend giving F4:AF a try. Talk about a learning curve :D.
But yeah, I agree FB+ is the best WW2 flight sim ever produced, so far, from a technical aspect :). Oh, and if you're flying FB, you HAVE to get Il-2 Stab! http://www.users.on.net/~mjtm/IL-2/

Thanks for the help on the questions I asked, i've now got the hang of it :D
Best. Flightsim. Ever.
I could agree with that in terms of noob friendlyness (i couldnt think of any other way to put it :p ). When compared to other flight sims I have tried.. this one is very easy to get the hang of (IMO), with its training missions and relatively easy to understand instructions. Training in other sims explain how to do things in a pilot jargon and really expects you to know what things mean.
Got it pretty cheap and i love it, now thinking about getting the expansions in the future.

I know this is an age old thread, but I have to say, I totally agree!! Il-2 Sturmovik is an awesome game, yet for some reason I have not been able to play it online for years, since like the game was new, because I can never find a place to find a server, because from the ubi.com website it would never let me on... I really need to reinstall this game, because it is so good, and I probably will if somebody tells me where I can get the patches for it, and how to find a server (Not as easy as BF2, in my opinion). Its annoying because I used to have a joystick to play it with, and I was just getting good, but then I upgraded my PC, and low and behold I have nowhere to plug in my old joystick, so I had to get used to keyboard again, which I think is nowhere near as easy to use :P Any replies would be very welcome :D
